Korenika-Moškon is a small but exceptional wine producer in Slovenian Istria. The winery is located in the village of Korte, high in the hills above Piran and Portorož. Sometimes we organize wine parties for our friends, and at one of these events, their orange wine Sulne came in second place, just behind a great Barbaresco from Ca’ del Baio in Piedmont.
Our relationship to Korenika-Moškon
We have visited Korenika-Moškon several times over the years, and on each occasion, we bring their wines back home to Sweden. They produce exclusively organic and biodynamic wines, which gives them a special freshness. Korenika-Moškon is also very creative with their winemaking, meaning the wines don’t always follow the traditional flavor profiles of other wineries in the region. The results are intensely flavorful wines, and we really like this unique combination.
Description of wines
Korenika Moškon produces many different wines and uses largely autochthonous grapes (native grapes that have grown in the area for centuries). They also use international grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio.
- Istrian Malvazija - a white grape that is frequently used in Slovenian Istria, Croatian Istria and in Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy.
- Refošk (Refosco) - a red grape used in wine production in Slovenian Istria, Croatian Istria, and in Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy. The grape produces flavorful and tannin-rich wines.
Some Wines We Like
- Malvazija - A young Malvazija, aged for six months in stainless steel tanks.
- Sulne - A biodynamic orange wine blend consisting of 25% Istra Malvazija, 25% Chardonnay, and 25% Pinot Grigio. The grapes are macerated for 45 days and the wine is aged in oak barrels for six years, resulting in an intensely flavorful wine that pairs surprisingly well with many spicy Asian dishes.
- Kortinca - An intense Refosco. The grapes are macerated for 30 days, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for six years.

- Hotel Piran - Stay in the old town of Piran.
- Villas and apartments - Many residents and owners of villas and apartments rent them out during the tourist season, and most are of a high standard.
