The Logar Valley is considered one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Europe and the Alps—and we couldn’t agree more. The valley lies on the eastern side of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, a region slightly off the main tourist routes and less visited than the Julian Alps. This gives the area a calmer atmosphere, allowing visitors to explore in peace and quiet.
Logar valley
What makes the Logar Valley special is its incredible natural beauty, combined with secluded farms and a sense of tranquility. Only about 35 people live permanently in the valley, a pattern that is similar in the neighboring valleys of Robanov Kot and Matkov Kot.
There is a strong focus on ecotourism and staying on local farms. We recommend exploring some of these places to experience how people live in the area and to sample local delicacies. See the end of the article for tips on places to stay and eat.
How to Get There
What may appear close on the map can still be quite far in reality. The Logar Valley is located on the far side of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps from Ljubljana. There are several options for reaching it by car.
- Over Kamnik and Luče - This is the shortest route, but the road has many winding turns, so it’s not ideal for those prone to motion sickness. The drive takes about 2 hours.
- Via Jezersko and Austria - Another option is to drive to Kranj and then head toward Jezersko on the western side of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. From there, you’ll take a short drive through Austria before reaching Solčava and the Logar Valley. Don’t forget your passport! This route takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
- Via the motorway to Šentrupert - Take the E57 motorway toward Celje and Maribor, then exit at Šentrupert and drive toward Mozirje. This route has the fewest turns, but it is also the longest. The drive takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
A fun option is to combine routes 1 and 2 for a scenic tour around the entire Kamnik-Savinja massif. If you’re reading this post in our app, you can select Show on map in the menu at the top right to view a map with directions.
When entering the Logar Valley, there is an entrance fee of €7 (at the time of writing). Payment is accepted in cash only.
