Peričnik Waterfall

July 17, 2020 | 2 minutes read

The Peričnik Waterfall is located in the Vrata Valley, a few kilometers from the village of Mojstrana, which sits at the entrance to the valley. Peričnik is one of the taller waterfalls in Slovenia, and what makes it really special is that you can walk along a path behind the cascading water. The experience is thrilling, with the roar of the waterfall all around you—and you should expect to get a little wet!

The waterfall

The waterfall actually consists of two separate falls: an upper and a lower one. The upper fall is 16 meters high, while the lower one reaches 52 meters. Over time, the bulge in the rock behind the waterfall has been hollowed out, as softer sedimentary rock erodes away while the more durable volcanic rock remains.

The best time to visit the waterfall is in spring, when the snow in the Julian Alps melts, giving the falls extra power.

The waterfall is located a short distance up the road to the Vrata Valley, about a 10-minute walk from the main road.

How to Reach the Waterfall

From Ljubljana, it takes about 50 minutes to drive to Mojstrana. Currently, only 195 cars are allowed to enter the Vrata Valley at a time, unless you have booked accommodation in one of the huts in the valley. If the limit is reached, you can park in Mojstrana and take a free bus up to the valley.
