Robanov Kot

Robanov Kot (Roban’s Corner) is a hidden gem in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, located near the Logar Valley. Like Logar Valley, it is a glacial valley. The sign from the main road is easy to miss, which adds to its sense of seclusion. We love visiting Robanov Kot for its solitude and untouched natural beauty. Several isolated farms in the valley are still in operation.

Nature and History of Robanov Kot

Robanov Kot is a landscape park that is part of the EU’s Natura2000 ecological network, which aims to protect endangered species and habitats. The valley also features a unique cultural landscape, giving the impression that time has almost stood still. Several farms in the valley are still inhabited, with people living and farming much as they did long ago. For visitors, this offers a fascinating glimpse into what life in the valley was once like.

The valley is a glacial valley formed during the last Ice Age. It is surrounded by several peaks over 2,000 meters, the most beautiful and prominent is Ojstrica, standing at 2,350 meters.

At the end of the valley, you will find Roban’s homestead, which gave the valley its name. The homesteads here raise cattle and sheep, and when open, you can try locally produced dishes. Several homesteads in the valley also offer overnight stays, giving visitors the chance to experience local life and cuisine.

Getting to Robanov Kot

Robanov Kot is located on the eastern side of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, while Ljubljana lies to the southwest. Although it may appear close on the map, you must drive around the mountain range—either via the western route over Jezersko and through Austria, or along the eastern side.

  1. Over Kamnik and Luče - This is the closest route, but the road has many hairpin bends, so it is not recommended for those prone to motion sickness. The drive takes about 2 hours.
  2. The road over Jezersko and Austria - Drive to Kranj and then head toward Jezersko, located on the western side of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. From there, continue through a short stretch of Austria before reaching Solčava and Robanov Kot. Don’t forget your passport! This route takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Ecotourism

Several farms in the valley offer overnight stays and the chance to enjoy local food. This is a unique opportunity to experience life in the valley firsthand, living close to daily farm life while enjoying the care and hospitality of the hosts. You can also hike in the valley and the surrounding mountains. Many farms are happy to treat visitors to local delicacies when you stop by. Further down, you can find a list of farms that offer both accommodation and meals.
