Boka Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Slovenia. It is located in the Soča Valley, just west of the town of Bovec. The waterfall is visible directly from the road between Bovec and Kobarid, making it difficult to miss. Since it is located not far from the road, it is easy to make a quick stop and visit the waterfall while travelling between the many other attractions in the Soča Valley. We visited the waterfall in mid-May, when it was full of water.

The waterfall
The waterfall actually consists of two falls. The first is 106 metres high, with the water landing on a plateau, while the second is 30 metres high. Its source is a karst formation in the Kanin mountain massif. After the waterfall, the water flows through the deep and rocky Boka Creek for about a kilometre before eventually flowing into the Soča River.
The amount of water in Boka Waterfall varies greatly with the seasons. During the spring snowmelt, as much as 100 m³ per second can flow over the waterfall, while during the drier summer months, the flow can drop to just 2 m³ per second. In autumn, the flow increases again as rainfall becomes more frequent. The most spectacular views of the waterfall are therefore in spring, followed by autumn.
How to Reach the Waterfall
From Ljubljana, the fastest way to reach the Boka waterfall is to drive to Kranjska Gora and then cross the Vršič Pass. Descending from the pass on the other side brings you first into the Trenta Valley and then into the Soča Valley. The journey is about 140 kilometers and typically takes around 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Keep in mind that the Vršič Pass may be closed depending on the season and weather conditions. If that’s the case, an alternative route is to drive through Tarvisio in Italy and then re-enter Slovenia via the Predel Pass.
If you are coming from southern Slovenia, the fastest route to the Boka waterfall is through the Vipava Valley and the Soča Valley.

From the parking lot by the road, it takes about 10 - 15 minutes to walk up to the waterfall viewpoint.

Other Things to Do
Boka Waterfall is located in the Soča Valley, near the town of Bovec, Slovenia’s most important destination for adventure sports.
- Rafting - There are several rafting operators on the Soča River, an exceptionally beautiful river considered by many to be one of the most scenic in Europe. Its emerald-green colour is distinctive. The rafting season runs from April to October, with peak activity in July and August when tourism is at its highest. May is generally quieter and offers a more dramatic experience, as the river is higher due to melting snow in the mountains.
- Canyoning - Canyoning is about navigating canyons using various techniques such as climbing, jumping, swimming, and abseiling (similar to rafting). In the area around Bovec and the Soča River, there are several places where canyoning is offered.
- Zipline - Učja Zipline Park is Europe’s largest zipline park. It is located in the Učja Valley, not far from the Boka waterfall.
- Bicycling - There are many well-maintained cycling trails in the Soča Valley, offering varying levels of difficulty. Many of these routes pass through the stunning natural scenery of the valley. This blog will return with separate posts about the cycling trails at a later stage.

- Pristava Lepena - Stay surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Trenta Valley, right next to the stunning gorges of the Soča River.
- Boutique Hotel Dobra Vila - Hotel Dobra Vila is probably the best hotel in Bovec. It is located near the northern entrance to the town, yet still close to the centre.
- Hotel Boka - Located near the waterfall, this picturesque hotel is close to nature.

- Bovec Kitchn’ - A street food restaurant serving its own versions of traditional dishes from the Soča Valley. Here you will find local specialities such as grilled forest mushrooms, frika, and lamb steaks.
- Thirsty River Brewing - A local pub and craft brewery. The blog can confirm that the beer is excellent, especially their Styrian Blonde, which is perfect on a hot summer day when you are thirsty.
- Restaurant Mangrt - A high-quality restaurant located in the nearby town of Log pod Mangartom (Log under Mangart), right at the foot of Mount Mangart. The menu features dishes made with local ingredients sourced from nearby growers and producers.
