The Soča River is probably Slovenia’s most remarkable river, known for its distinctive emerald-green colour and the beautiful valleys through which it flows. The source of the Soča River is located in the incredibly beautiful Zadnja Trenta Valley and marks the beginning of a 138 km long river that flows through the Trenta and Soča Valleys before emptying into the Adriatic Sea near Monfalcone in Italy. The source of the Soča River is located near the entrance to the Zadnja Trenta Valley, just below the Mojstrovka Massif. The Soča River Source Hut is situated next to the car park. From the hut, it is about a 15-minute uphill walk to the source.
Beneath the Mojstrovka, Jalovec, Šite, and Travnik massifs, water collects in an underground lake. From there, it flows through a narrow underground channel before emerging at the source of the Soča River. This is one of the cleanest and most beautiful karst springs in the Julian Alps.
Karst is a landscape formed in limestone areas by the action of water dissolving and eroding the rock underground. Large parts of the Julian Alps are composed of limestone.
The limestone and other minerals that the water picks up along the way are also what give the Soča River its distinctive emerald-green colour. Some even describe it as a natural colour factory.
Getting To the Source
From the hut, it is a 15-minute uphill hike past several waterfalls to reach the source. The final section is exposed and equipped with fixed cables and metal steps. Hiking boots are recommended, and some comfort with heights.
Upon reaching the source, you can look directly down into the gorge where the water emerges from underground.
If you prefer to avoid exposed sections and via ferrata, there is a viewpoint a little further down the trail.
How to Get Here
The easiest way to reach the Zadnja Trenta Valley and the source of the Soča River is to drive over the Vršič Pass via Kranjska Gora. From Ljubljana to Kranjska Gora it is about 85 kilometres. The road over the Vršič Pass and down into the Zadnja Trenta Valley is about 22 kilometres. The entire journey takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.
